Review BigFork (noish + xedh) at The Sound Projector
Noish + Xedh
Big Fork
AMP-RECS AMP053 online release
aMor/discos CDR
(2010)
Spanish electronica artiste Miguel A. García impressed us last ish with his “stern and severe” approach to very minimal electronic noise on Armiarmak. On Big Fork García appears under his xedh guise alongside fellow player noish, and together they stew up four gorgeous tracks of edgy, fizzy, electronic mashed turnip paste, with plenty of mesmerising power leaking out through the wodges of dense sparking-plugging mayhem. They can sometimes drift into the unchallenging droney-ambient comfort stations, but I like them best when their eruptions are abrasive and slightly cruel, suggesting a degree of friendly sadism. The tracks are expressed as complex streams of characters which are too hard to type, but the 15-minute opener piece is a strong one, containing four or five separate ideas which seem to fold in and out as if operated by a restless hand tuning the shortwave radio dial. It creates a vaguely daydreamy sensation which is not unpleasant. The second track is more full-on and brutal, and for three minutes one endures the goring of a snorting electronic bull. The fourth long track is again episodic, like the first, but not quite as thrilling or unpredictable. On the cover, detourned versions of Disney cartoon characters gamble, drink and smoke cigars, but it's an image of funny sleazy degradation that Big Fork can't quite live up to. ED PINSENT

makeart::2010:::placard:::::::::>>>>>
make art is an international festival dedicated to free/libre arts
and technologies, distributed digital artworks and net art. The sixth
edition of make art focuses on works halfway between art and design,
collaborative, scalable and participative methods. The adventure
"in-between design" begins here, to be imagined in this creative
development, where everyone can participate and where artwork keeps on
evolving. Are these projects just curiosities or a real alternative to
the graphic conformism ruled by an industry that dictates its aesthetic
codes? Please come and join us to answer this question... http://makeart.goto10.org
Every year make art encloses itself in a "placard" (cupboard in French)
for one evening. It is a place dedicated to headphone listening only,
where unusual sound and visual experimentations occur, at the crossroads
of electronic, improvised and noise music. Come and join us in our
"placard", we will make some room for you. Tonight Benjamin Cadon will
reorchestrate and debug the famous blockbuster 2012 using micro-loops,
Marije Baalman will livecode from her own livecoding performance (!),
Noish~ vs Automata_v001 duo will grow an improvisation starting from
seven sound seeds, Alberto de Campo will combine analog and digital
meta-control to make a musical exploration on the fly, while
Segmentation Fault will patch and merge drones with deconstructed
rhythms.
Segmentation Fault is an investigation into computer assisted drones
and noise music. From granular synthesis to phase vocoder, Fibonacci
sequencers to generative algorithms, they invite you to witness an
intense construction and deconstruction of digital noise.
Segmentation Fault are musicians Xavi Manzanares, AKA daax!, from
Barcelona (ES) and Oscar Martin, AKA noish~ from Winterhur (CH). Their
collaboration debuted in the Spanish audionerd underground scene, and
since then they have performed at Hangar (ES), CSOA La Fibra (ES),
Pure Data Convention 2009 (BR), Linux audio conference 2008 (DE),
VAD08 (ES) and nitcasm08 (ES). http://noconventions.mobi/segmentationfault!/
noish_VS_automata
Noish Vs Automata_v001 is a software based live improvisation. Noish
used the software Pure Data to create a sonic automaton that relies on
seven small sound seeds. During the perfomance these seeds are transformed, mixed, processed through different iterations.
Oscar Martin, AKA Noish is a sound explorer interested in computer music,
the aesthetics of error and generative noise. He uses Pure Data to
develop his own environment dedicated to algorithmic compositions and
the deconstruction of sound field recordings. http://noconventions.mobi/noish/

[TN022] Noish >> trAnsCodE
netrelease at tecnoNucleo netlabel
:::::::::::trAnsCodE:::::::::::::
Is a new release containing two tracks originated by playing and experimenting with (bash) linux console and using one simple command:
cat /dev/mem >> /dev/dsp.
This action will dump a file (in this case a file like "/dev/mem" which is related to the computer memory) towards our sound device "/dev/dsp". It will start then interpreting this input data transforming them into sounds.A raw and 8-bit sound is generated containing its evolutions, dynamic changes, rhythms, silences, textures, etc. Sometimes it sounds like loading old fashioned spectrum cassette games.
At this time, I was reading an essay by Simon Yuill about the concepts and the relation between brutalism architecture and computing art science
(http://1010.co.uk/code_brut.pdf)
This article somehow influenced me at the very beginning of the creative process, but afterwards I decided to work in other directions with these raw materials: cooking them by using mutant mathematics generative processes, iterative and fractal functions applied to granular synthesis parameters. Simultaneously I was also programming all the software (patches) needed in PureData frameworks generating feedback between product and process.
At the end by mixing the sound blocks obtained from the transformations explained above, the two tracks of the release were born. (in the multitrack editor "Ardour" linux-audio software )
What fascinates me the most from digital media, is having the possibility to transform whatever you can decode into 0 and 1, and been able to dump it into different shapes and even languages (audio can be turned into image, DNA from a cauliflower into a sonora piece...) I find here a retroflavour of poetic absurd DADA; some kind of situationism deviation, or perhaps a shoot of machine desire connection....

in / out
IN & OUT is his first vinyl release and uses a wide range of environmental recordings which are processed digitally in more "electro-acoustic" ways. This leads to a balance between "Drone" and "Electro-Acoustic" where the acoustic potential of conventional reality is enlarged via digital processing. In his own words: "It brings attention to the peripheral zones of the sound phenomenon". Through intense mutation & deconstruction of acoustic materials a new or previously hidden meaning can be revealed for the blind spot of our perception.
